Animal Production Career Options

Animal Production Career OptionsAnimal Production Career OptionsThere are several careers involving animal breeding and production. Some career paths involve direct care and management of production animals, while other positions provide educational or veterinary support to those direct care providers. Here are some careers in livestock. Beef Cattle Farmer Beef farmers raise many species of beef cattle as a part of the meat production industry. There are two major types of beef cattle producers cow-calf or feedlot operations. Cow-calf operations breed their own calves and raise them to weaning age, where they are sold to feedlots. Feedlot operations purchase weaned calves and raise them to market weight. Dairy Farmer Dairy farmers manage cattle used for milk production. Many operations also raise their own replacement heifers to add to the herd. Dairy farms may be smaller family farms (which are frequently part of cooperatives) or larger corporate production farms. Dairy farmers seek to increase the milk production yield of their herd through careful management and selective breeding. Egg Farmer Egg farmers care for laying hens used in the egg production industry. They may raise their own replacement stock and cull older hens to sell to meat producers. Operations can be large commercial entities or smaller family farms, and these facilities can either be cage-based or free range. Poultry Farmer Poultry farmers raise chickens, turkeys, or other birds for meat production. The most popular area of poultry production is broiler production (broilers are young chickens raised for meat). Farms can range from large indoor commercial operations to smaller free range or organic broiler production facilities. Aquaculture Farmer Aquaculture farmers raise fish and shellfish for use as food, bait, or breeding stock. Roles within this career path may include site manager, production manager, water quality technician, and aquaculture technician. The aquaculture industry is one of the fastest growing animal production career paths. Horse Breeder Horse breeders produce many types of horses for use in sport and recreation. Breeders often focus on one particular breed and niche market (such as Thoroughbred racing). Breeding industry roles may also include management positions such as stallion manager or broodmare manager. Pig Farmer Pig farmers raise swine as a part of the pork production industry. They may be involved in farrow-to-finish operations (raising pigs from birth to market weight), feeder pig operations (raising piglets from birth to less than 60 pounds), and finisher operations (which raise piglets obtained from feeder pig operations and raise them to market weight). There are also career paths in pets. Dog Breeder Dog breeders produce purebred dogs for show, sport, breeding, or companionship. Most breeders specialize by producing one type of dog and have advanced knowledge of the pedigrees and conformational standards of that breed. Many breeder s also send their dogs to shows or other performance competitions. Exotic Bird Breeder Exotic bird breeders breed and sell pet birds such as parrots and finches. Most bird breeders focus on one or two types of birds. Breeders may also enter their birds in shows to be judged against other top representatives of their breed. Reptile Breeder Reptile breeders raise and sell species such as turtles, snakes, and lizards to the commercial or pet reptile markets. Breeders usually specialize in producing just a few species for a specific market, and they usually have advanced knowledge of the species they produce. And there are other options. Animal Geneticist Animal geneticists study genes and heritability of traits in animal populations. Geneticists may be involved in research, selective breeding programs, studying population genetics, and more. Many work directly with producers of livestock species, such as cattle and poultry. Veterinary Theriogenologist Veterinary theriogenologists are s pecialists with advanced training in reproductive medical techniques. They may work in clinical practice, research, private industry, or academia. motherboard certification as a veterinary theriogenologist requires at least 3 additional years of experience after completion of a basic Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Animal Health Inspector Animal health inspectors oversee animal production facilities (including dairies, hatcheries, and feedlots) to ensure that humane standards and legal regulations are enforced. Health inspectors travel extensively to complete their duties. Agricultural Extension Agent Agricultural extension agents present information to local livestock producers and advise them on a variety of management decisions. These agents must be familiar with a wide variety of animal operations including those involved in dairy, beef, poultry, and swine production. Equine Extension Agent Equine extension agents advise individuals in the horse industry (including breeder s) on management decisions and advances in equine care. Equine agents must be familiar with various types of horses, popular equine performance sports, and equine management strategies.

Ask These 6 Questions to Make Rational Decisions

Ask These 6 Questions to Make Rational Decisions Article by Cecilia MeisPeople accidentally swallow eight spiders every year in their sleep. Although debunked numerous times, this myth remains the most widely circulated fact of the 21st century, according to the National Institute of Arachnological Research.Did you believe me? Because I just lied to you.Proving such a statement would be tedious. Also, a quick internet search would reveal that the National Institute of Arachnological Research doesnt exist. Why do myths persist despite published research proving their opposites? Because somewherbeie in your memory, youve stored something that sounds familiar. It might have been a sibling trying to scare you. You might have a mild spider phobia. You might have read it in a 1993 article by Lisa Holst, who, ironically, welches trying to demonstrate why people readily accept facts shared through email chains. The myth triggers an emotional rather than a skep tical response. It can be dangerous to rely on your gut, or whatpsychologist Daniel Kahneman calls System 1 thinking automatic judgments that stem from associations stored in the memory. This type of thinking develops over time as people attempt to make sense of seemingly random events that occur around them. The more we make sense of our environments, the more control or perceived control we have over our lives. But our guts can lead us astray. Our biases can drive us to focus on the wrong information or seek information that matches rather than challenges what we already believe. To build your rational-thinking skills, ask yourself these questions1. What Would I Say to a Friend?Create space between your thoughts and feelings. You can do that by pretending to give advice to a friend, which allows your brain to switch from rumination to problem-solving. The more highly charged the situation, the more you need to separate yourself from your momentary feelings. Recent studies have found that journalingin the third person allows you to evaluate yourself and your situations more clearly and thoughtfully.2. What Are Three Possible Outcomes?Uncertainty is terrifying. Its easier and less stressful to imagine a single outcome, so we do. Instead, researchers say you should imagine multiple outcomes to improve your accuracy and logical thinking. If youre imagining the possible success of your business in five years, come up with three figures thatpredictyour level of success high, medium, and low. Your high and low numbers should be improbable but not unrealistic. This approach helps you avoid being blindsided by extremes on either endby planing for their possibility.3. What Is the Counterargument to This Decision or Belief? We like to be right. We like for others to agree with our decisions or beliefs. However, when we think with our System 1 minds, were often blind to other options or perspectives. Use the following tips to frame counterarguments that will help you assess your position more rationally- Be generous in your research and genuinely thoughtful when building a counterargument.- Shift your motive from winning to gaining value. Julia Galef, cofounder of the Center for Applied Rationality, says this allows her to imagine a scenario where she never loses, because one of her options will likely help her succeed.- List the points of agreement between both arguments.- Compare both arguments side by side, as if someone else wrote them.Shifting your mindset to someone elses view isnt easy. Galef advises using mindfulness techniques to identify when your emotions are running high particularly when someone is challenging your beliefs. Focus on seeking the truth rather than on winning.4. Why Am I Attached to This Decision or Belief?People often cling to irrational beliefs because theyre attached to their identities. Maybe your spouse says an alternate route is faster than the one youve always taken. You overreact, maybe because you think your spouse is insulting your intelligence. Researchers say your sense of self-worth is a significant factor in rational thinking. One study found that when people feel positively about themselves, theyre more likely to accept uncomfortable facts. Before looking at information that challenges your beliefs, write down your top three qualities and recall examples of each. Explain your reaction so your spouse knows how to better present alternatives in the future.5. Is This Too Good to Be True?Your mom was right Information that sounds too good to be true often is. Generic or flowery languagecan cover factual inconsistencies. For example,Colgate found trouble after claiming more than 80 percent of dentists recommendedits brand. What the company failed to mention was that those dentists recommended Colgate along with other brands.Pay special attention to the wordsa claim uses recommended versus preferred, for example. Also watch for averages without context and whethera claim seems completely one-si ded. If it feels too good (or bad), it probably is, so dig a little deeper.6. Is This Harmful?Seeking truth is important, but so is knowing when you shouldnt waste your timechallenging meaningless falsehoods. For example, during a casual conversation at a networking event, someone might tell you they hold the record for the most hot dogs eaten in 10 minutes in the state of Georgia. Before you whip out your best according to voice, ask yourself if this lie is harmful. The claim, though potentially false, doesnt affect anyone except Georgias actual hot-dog-eating champion, but only if that winner is relying on sponsorship funding from people at the same networking event. If youre planning to work with this person, maybe you should determine whether theyre a compulsive liar. Otherwise, smile, nod and politely exit the conversation.Rational thinking requires removing emotional responses, checking biases, and considering other options before trying to convince your grandmother that shes ea ten 680 spiders in her life.By the way, according to Bill Shear, former president of the American Arachnological Society, Spiders regard us much like theyd regard a big rock. It looks like youre safe.Look it up if you dont believe me.Versions of this article originally appeared on SUCCESS.comand in the October 2017 issue of SUCCESS Magazine.Cecilia Meis is the integrated content editor for SUCCESS magazine and SUCCESS.com. Seasonal Hiring Trends for Growing Businesses

Seasonal Hiring Trends for Growing BusinessesSeasonal Hiring Trends for Growing BusinessesSeasonal Hiring Trends for Growing BusinessesFor organizations with 50 or a few hundred employees, seasonal hiringfor peak season is a perennial challenge. In 2011 the challenge is only getting steeper, as labor costs come under greater scrutiny in the post-recession retrenchment. This economic shift has forced businesses and schools into a new model and made them see the value proposition of seasonal labor, says Brian Keenan, president of the consulting and staffing division of Core Education and Consulting Solutions of Atlanta.Seasonal Hiring Is Redefined Indeed, temporary staffing is expanding into new sectors like education, as companies look to squeeze every drop out of work schedules. Our clients are experiencing a confluence of two realities budgetary constraints and seasonal patterns, says Keenan. For example, to live within shrinking budgets, many schools are bringing in non-executive se cretaries for the 9-month school year, to serve both parents and faculty, he says.In the hospitality industry, long accustomed to leveraging seasonal labor, the slack in the US labor market is providing a rare opportunity to upgrade the quality of this specialized workforce. When I was working in the hospitality industry, we would just bestattungs seasonal people if you had a pulse, youd be hired, says Jeff Lolli, an instructor at Widener Universitys School of Hospitality Management in Chester, Pa. Today theres a much greater pool of people, and employers are being extremely selective.Students Are a Better Value than EverStudents with a healthy work ethic have always been a strategic component of the seasonal workforce, even if they have little or no industry-specific background. But now, with jobs scarce, students in a given industry provide even greater value as seasonal employees and more are available for work. Its become very difficult for our hospitality students to get season al positions, says Lolli. Some have even worked for free.Students and college recruits can provide seasonal help while simultaneously bonding with the employer, cultivating a professional relationship that could feed the recruitment pipeline. Some of our seasonal workers are accounting students in the junior or senior years, says Karla Dennis, CEO of Cohesive Tax, an accounting firm in Cypress, Calif. They have a very good fundamental background, so theyre doing reconciliation, payroll tax returns, W-2s, and so on.Seasoned Workers for Seasonal WorkMany employers, finding more of last years seasonal workers totenstill available, are bolstering their contingent workforces with returnees who provide year-over-year continuity and season-specific experience. Some of our seasonal people have been with us for a number of years, says Alan Fiske, managing director of Fiske Co., a Plantation, Fla., consulting and accounting firm. These professionals are accustomed to the part-time income that comes with the job, according to Fiske. While many seasonal workers would jump at any offer of permanent employment, others are content with a job that comes with a periodic schedule. For some of our seasonal staff, this is their second job, or theyre taking classes, says Jessica Barrera, human resources manager for Blue Plate Catering in Chicago. Blue Plates seasonal workers appreciate workplace flexibilityour staff books their own schedules, Barrera says.Signs Point to Slight Tightening in LaborAlthough the US unemployment rateis still very high, the seasonal employment market may be starting to shift some power back to workers. Our fill times for school districts are getting a little longer now, says Keenan. In the hospitality industry, hotels and resorts are reinvesting in recruitment, anticipating an accelerating recovery. Well have 50 recruiters at our career ritterlich in 2011, up from 32 last year and 25 the year before, says Lolli.Unemployment Taxes Are a Rising IssueMultiple e xtensions to unemployment benefits have distorted the labor market for many business owners. Some of our clients have had challenges recruiting because their jobs are relatively low paid and workers can collect unemployment for up to 2 years, says Rob Wilson, president of human resources outsourcing firm Employco in Westmont, Ill.The current state of unemployment compensation has also motivated many companies to think twice before hiring substantial numbers of seasonal workers, only to have them collect unemployment benefits through the entire off season, often at additional expense to the employer. If you lay off workers, depending on the state, it can cause your unemployment tax rate to rise, says William Even, a labor economist and professor at the Farmer School of Business at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. In some situations its better to keep those employees on and increase and decrease hours with the season, Even advises.

3 Benefits New Parents Should Look for in Their Job Search

3 Benefits New Parents Should Look for in Their Job Search 3 Benefits New Parents Should Look for in Their Job Search Whether you’re re-entering the workforce or simply looking for a change of pace, both parents and soon-to-be parents face unique challenges while job hunting. Considerations move far beyond basic benefits and salary questions. Asking, “How well can I take care of my family with this job?” raises the stakes much higher than asking, “How well can I take care of myself and my partner with this job?” And when you add in the fact that everyone -   parent or not - wants to best serve their career goals with every job change, the situation becomes much more complicated. At Zappos , I’ve been fortunate enough to experience a workplace that is not only family-friendly, but in some ways, family-first. Since I began working at Zappos, I’ve had two children. I’ve seen the landscape evolve from flexible for parents to supportive to parents. It’s a subtle distinction, but it’s an important one. Although Zappos employees may be uniquely lucky in that respect, there are certain features that parents in any field should keep top-of-mind while interviewing for new roles. Here are the top three to consider: Flexibility alone isn’t enough, but it’s indispensable, particularly for new parents. Working around daycare hours, adjusting to a new nanny, even adjusting to the transition back to the workplace itself is difficult! I’d never recommend going into an interview and asking, “How flexible are you when I have childcare concerns?” but do pay attention to how flexible they are with scheduling in general. Having an employer who focuses on getting the work done well instead of when you’re doing the work is nice-to-have for a single person, but it’s a game changer for a parent. One benefit I’ve been seeing more and more employers offering is a “ramp back” program. It can take many forms, allowing parents to ease back into their working lives after staying at home with their little ones. At Zappos, we created a program around this mindset. We offer a program that allows new parents to work on an altered schedule so their transition back to work after maternity or paternity leave is less stressful. When heading back to work, parents aren’t always prepared for how disorienting the change can be. One day, you’re in all-consuming baby mode, the next you’re back at your 9-to-5. It’s a drastic change! New parents shouldn’t be penalized for taking maternity or paternity leave. Employers should make coming back as easy as possible. Benefits aren’t always intangible - don’t forget to take a look around at what they offer at the office. Here at Zappos, we’re always learning from like-minded companies and listening to feedback from our employees. One benefit we’ve recently implemented is emergency off-site daycare, meaning that parents never have to be put in the uncomfortable position of trying to find child care last minute. We also have “mother’s rooms” throughout the building for nursing mothers. I think this is really cool, because it means that if you’re breastfeeding, you no longer have to be relegated to the bathroom or closet, which is unfortunately too real for lots of moms. Not only do our mother’s rooms offer privacy, Zappos also provides hospital-grade pump machines (no more lugging bulky kits to work!) and refrigerators in every room to store the milk. While not every company has the resources for pump rooms or daycare , it’s important to think about proximity to your child while job hunting. Shaving off an extra minute here and there means a lot. Traditional benefits are still extremely important. A lot of companies are catching up with fantastic maternity and paternity benefits - at Zappos, we offer 4 months off at 100 percent pay, with an extra month ahead should it be medically necessary. When doing research on maternity leave policies, there are few that offer one year of paid time off or anything close to it so when you find a good policy jump on it! Our healthcare is similarly impressive, and great for families. We cover 100 percent of health care for employees and 50 percent of health care for dependents. When you get down to brass tacks, your health care plan is one of the most important benefits you get from your workplace. Even though parenthood presents a new host of considerations for your job hunting, don’t forget to interrogate the foundational stuff that would make or break another opportunity, pre-parenthood. Emergency daycare and offering flexibility in schedules is nothing without a healthcare plan that is both affordable and makes sense for your family.

5 Big, Easy Changes for More Job Search Confidence

5 Big, Easy Changes for More Job Search Confidence 5 Big, Easy Changes for More Job Search Confidence 5 Big, Easy Changes for More Job Search Confidence Actually Let’s say that you’re reaching out to a potential contact via LinkedIn whom you hope can connect you to a manager you’d like to interview with. In your email, you write, “Actually, we have a mutual friend in common, Sam Smith.” Well, actually, you don’t need to use “actually” in an actual sentence. Similar to “sorry,” “actually” is one of those filler words that people use all the time. In fact, actually is so used (and often misused) that it doesn’t make sense. Score some job search confidence and ditch the word “actually” by getting straight to the point. Sorry An employer reaches out for a job interview and asks if you’re available on Friday. You respond via email by saying, “I’m sorry, Friday doesn’t work for me, but I could do Monday morning.” There’s nothing wrong with that answer, right? Wrong. Apologizing has become so common that the words “I’m sorry” are so overused and have become meaningless- and unnecessary. So skip the “sorry” and just rephrase your response without it. You won’t be, um, sorry that you did. Hopefully You write what you would consider to be a brilliant cover letter. It tells a strong story, provides specific examples of how your previous work experiences make you the ideal candidate for the position- you’ve even spell-checked it three times! In your closing paragraph, you write, “Hopefully you will respond to my job application.” While it seems innocuous, “hopefully” is one of those words that is, as Sally from Peanuts would say, “wishy-washy.” “Hopefully” can sound like you’re weak and maybe a little desperate. You can hold onto hope that a hiring manager will contact you for a job interview- hopefully, you won’t let them know that directly. Just It’s been two weeks since your job interview, and you are busting to hear back from your prospective boss. So you send an email to him as a follow-up, but you start off the email like this: “Hi, Mr. Smith. I hope you are well. Just checking in with you regarding the job interview….” Thing is, using the word “just” can make you appear to lack job search confidence, and that you’re afraid of intruding on the other person’s time. And it goes without saying that neither one of these are attributes that a strong job candidate should exhibit! Just leave the word “just” out of your email, and say what you need to say! Kind Of You’re in the middle of a job interview. It’s going well, and your boss-to-be is rattling off many of the duties of the job. He takes a breath and asks, “Do you understand everything that would be required of you?” and you respond, “Kind of.” Similar to “hopefully,” “kind of” (and his evil twin brother “sort of”) are not powerful responses and only show that you’re probably confused, uninterested, or both. Some job seekers respond with “kind of” when they actually mean “no” but are too afraid to use the word. But it’s important to be honest, so instead of saying “kind of,” simply respond with a “yes” or a “no” and ask for clarification if you need it. It’s super important to appear confident when you job hunt! As you continue on in your job search, you’ll gain job search confidence, and a confident job seeker is very attractive to potential employers indeed! Readers, do you have job search confidence or are you slowly learning to build it? Do you use any of the above words during your search? Let us know in the comments below!

Learn About Being a Canine Rehabilitation Therapist

Learn About Being a Canine Rehabilitation Therapist Learn About Being a Canine Rehabilitation Therapist Canine rehabilitation therapists are animal health professionals that work to improve a dog’s range of movement and provide pain management. Duties Canine rehabilitation therapists are responsible for creating and implementing therapy plans to increase an animal’s mobility and minimize any pain they may be experiencing as a result of an injury or a chronic condition. The therapist works through the treatment plan with the dog, making adjustments as necessary to ensure that progress is being made in each session.   Therapists may be assisted by veterinary technicians that have achieved a related certification, such as the Certified Canine Rehabilitation Assistant (CCRA) designation, or assistants that have extensive practical experience in therapy work. Therapists may make use of a variety of treatment options such as applying heat or cold to an affected area, electrode stimulation, massage, hydrotherapy (swimming), treadmill work, bandaging, splinting, drug therapy, or exercise programs. They must also keep careful records to track the dog’s progress and document the specific therapies that are utilized. As is the case with most careers requiring direct contact with animals, canine rehabilitation therapists must be sure to take proper safety measures to minimize the chance of injury from a bite or scratch. It is particularly important when working with dogs that could be in pain or under stress from being in unfamiliar surroundings. Career Options Most canine rehabilitation therapists are licensed professionals, with careers in veterinary medicine or human physical therapy. Canine therapy may be either a full- or part-time pursuit for these individuals. Some vets and physical therapists may choose to become involved in therapy for other species in addition to dogs. Equine rehabilitation therapy is one popular option. Education Training There are several specialty training programs in canine rehabilitation that are available to both animal and human health professionals. Coursework tends to focus on topics in anatomy and physiology, exercise programs, aquatic therapy, therapeutic interventions, rehabilitation program design, pain management, and other related areas. Two well-known certifications are the CCRT and the CCRP. The Certified Canine Rehabilitation Therapist  (CCRT) program is offered to licensed veterinarians and physical therapists. Candidates for the CCRT designation must complete three core courses and a 40-hour internship at an approved facility. The program is offered in locations across the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Since its inception in 2003, over 400 individuals have achieved certification. The University of Tennessee offers its own Certificate in Canine Rehabilitation Program (CCRP ). This certificate program is open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, physical therapists, and physical therapist assistants. The university is widely recognized as one of the largest rehabilitation facilities in the United States and boasts state of the art equipment. The program was established in 1999 and has hundreds of graduates practicing worldwide. Salary Most canine rehabilitation therapists are also veterinarians or human physical therapists, so it is helpful to look to salary information for those professions when discussing compensation in this field. The median wage for veterinarians was $84,460 per year according to a 2012 report by the ?Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Earnings in the 2012 BLS salary survey ranged from less than $51,530 for the lowest 10 percent of all veterinarians to more than $144,100 for the top 10 percent of all veterinarians. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) reports that the median salary for companion animal exclusive veterinarians was $97,000 in 2009.   The median wage for physical therapists was $79,860 per year in the 2012 salary survey conducted by the BLS. Earnings ranged from $55,620 for the lowest 10 percent of all physical therapists to more than $112,020 for the top 10 percent of all physical therapists. This salary range is comparable to that which is earned by veterinary professionals. Career Outlook In recent years, pet owners have demonstrated an increasing willingness to spend money on pet health care services, a trend that has been well documented by the American Pet Product Association (APPA). Due to this growing interest in canine well-being, there should be a greater demand for the services that are provided by canine rehabilitation therapists. The Bureau of Labor Statistics employment surveys also indicates that the demand for veterinarians and physical therapists will be strong for the foreseeable future, with the veterinary profession growing by 12 percent and the physical therapy profession by 36 percent.

Julys National Month Events

Julys National Month Events Julys National Month Events If you live in the United States you know what the Fourth of July means to the country. Each year, from coast-to-coast, millions of people set off fireworks and come together for outdoor picnics to celebrate Americas independence. But business owners selling American flags and lawn chairs dont have to limit themselves  to July Fourth promotions when there are other ways to celebrate July as a business owner. Businesses from major corporations to mom and pop shops and numerous worthwhile organizations and special interest groups establish promotion during July to get their name and message out there. In fact, the U.S. is particularly prolific at creating national month events to promote a business or cause. Some events may seem so silly they diminish the importance of other events, but they are important to someone and worth considering. Coupons, discounts, donations, TV and radio appearances  are all ways to help a cause or sell a product, but even sharing a ribbon, badge, or pin, or blogging about something shows you (and by extension, your business) care and are connected. Is there a way your business can benefit by promoting itself during July? Try working social networks first. Get out the word that you care about a cause, group, or issue. It might help you connect with your customers and clients, and you may just learn something new in the process. These are some of the popular topics or issues celebrated in July: Food With Fourth of July celebrations come cookouts and other celebrations with food at the center. This makes it appropriate for July to be the national month for grilling, picnics, hot dogs, baked beans, horseradish, pickles, blueberries, and ice cream. For those who like to do their cooking in a kitchen, July also is National Culinary Arts Month and Lasagna Awareness Month. Home and Family Fourth of July celebrations also bring families together, so its only natural that July is Family Reunion Month and Sandwich Generation Month, a recognition of people caring for family members from multiple generations. Its also the national month for bereaved parents, children of divorced parents, and making a difference to children. The warm weather also makes it appropriate for July to serve as Air-Conditioning Appreciation Days. And since pets likely will be spending more time outside with the rest of the family, July also is National Doghouse Repairs Month Nature In addition to picnics and other celebrations, July is a good month just to get out and enjoy nature, so it is  National Recreation and Parks Month  as well as National Share A Sunset With Your Lover Month. Health and Wellness Its always a good time to be thinking about health-related issues, and July specifically serves as national awareness month for  hemochromatosis screening,  herbal prescriptions, and  international group B strep. For those looking to add a little fun to the month and raise some spirits, it also is National Wheelchair Beautification Month. Miscellaneous Some of the things recognized in July dont easily fit into a category. Some national months are serious, like bioterrorism/disaster education and awareness and social wellness, and some are fun, like women and motorcycles and recognition of Blondie and Deborah Harry. Others are less exciting, like cell phone courtesy and smart irrigation.

5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringe

5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringe 5 office holiday party stories that will make you cringe Office holiday parties can be a fun time for coworkers to get to know each other more personally without having to talk deadlines or budgets or clients. They can be the perfect place to celebrate the holidays together while unwinding a bit away from the stresses of the office. However, there’s sometimes that one coworker who drinks a little too much, makes a fool of themselves on the dance floor, overshares about  something  Ã¢€¦ or worse.Because it’s that time of year again, five women shared their most cringeworthy  holiday party  stories with Fairygodboss. Maybe we should all take some mental notes, so history doesn’t repeat itself.1. Misogynistic mayhem“In a past role, I worked for a national company that was fairly well known to be misogynistic and a generally negative place to work (think sales reps ripping out the carpet from their peers just to score a sale and the commission),” says Jessica T., a marketing expert. “Every year they threw two big parties, one of whi ch was a holiday party. The structure of the party was such that a large hall was rented by multiple companies, and the costs of the event were split as such. It had all the makings of a sh*t show, and it did not disappoint.“Employees pre-drank for this party. It was broadcasted and common knowledge that this was the habits for employees for parties. But I didn’t expect the owners of the company to do the same, eventually showing up absolutely three sheets to the wind. We also didn’t expect his dates (I recall there being a few). They didn’t work for the company, and again, it was common knowledge on the ‘professional’ nature of the dates that often accompanied him to these events.“It was beyond cringy. I left that company for a multitude of reasons, not least of which for it being an extremely negative place to work for women and men.”2. Inebriated injuries“At my company’s holiday party last year, one of my coworkers got so drunk he was doing high-kicks in the m iddle of the bar,” says Erin, a  financial analyst. “It was pretty funny at first, if I’m honest. But then he kicked so high he actually ripped his suit pants and threw himself flat on his back. He ended up having to miss work the next few days because he had pulled so many muscles in his legs and actually broke his wrist landing. We all just watched, totally cringing.”3. Obliterated overshares“I had one colleague (who no longer works for the company) get so drunk at a holiday party one year that she told everyone just how much she actually hated her job,” says Shyanne, a fitness trainer.“She was a trainer, too, and she went around telling everyone how much she hates the fitness center we work at and basically made fun of all of her clients. She even fat-shamed a few of them. It was like the more she had to drink, the more brutally critical she became. A few of us were just listening to her go on, wondering when she’d catch on about how  awkward  the conversation was becoming. We’re all a tight-knit family at the gym, so it kind of came out of nowhere. I think she felt awkward enough the morning after that she ended up quitting her job a few weeks after that.”4. Wardrobe malfunctions“At my company’s holiday party two years ago I wore a flowy black dress that was a just above the knee,” says Becky, a real estate broker. “I went to the bathroom, and when I came out, my dress had gotten tucked into the Spanx. I was ordering another drink at the bar, without realizing, when my boss came up to me to let me know that my ‘granny panties’ were showing. Not only was it incredibly inappropriate for him to be the one to tell me, but I was also just mortified. It must have been 10 minutes before he said anything, and I have no idea who else noticed. Cringe.”5. Fighting during festivities“My boyfriend came with me to my holiday party last year, but I was pretty  nervous  to bring him along because he knew a lot about one of my male colle agues at work who I couldn’t stand - he’d always make sexual innuendo jokes and make the women in the office feel really uncomfortable,” says Lara, a software developer.  Ã¢€œWell, enough drinks in, this coworker was at it again. This time he came over and shook my boyfriend’s hand and made a comment about how my boyfriend scored with me. My boyfriend shook it off and just agreed. But as the night went on, he kept making comments about the skirts I wear to work and that my emails are sometimes flirtatious (they’re not), as if to get under his skin. Eventually, he and my boyfriend went at it and got in an ugly fight in the middle of the party. I was so embarrassed, angry and upset. I felt even more uncomfortable around him in the office the next morning. The worst part is that he still works with me.”AnnaMarie Houlis is a feminist, a freelance journalist and an adventure aficionado with an affinity for impulsive solo  travel. What is Your Competitive Edge Strategic Planning for Your Brand

What is Your Competitive Edge Strategic Planning for Your Brand What is Your Competitive Edge Strategic Planning for Your Brand What is Your Brand? Your brand is the essence or soul of your business. Every action you take impacts your brand. Ideally, you want a brand that is memorable, has a great reputation and clearly explains to potential customers just what your business is about. Your brand should be appealing to your target market demographic, and be timeless so that you do not have to rebrand as your business grows and changes. What is Your Competitive Edge? Your competitive edge can be anything from pricing or service to your overall business model. What is it about your business that makes you different from your competition? If there is no clear answer, you need to strategically plan and develop your brand further so that you can gain the competitive edge you need to succeed in today̢۪s market. Strategic Planning for Your Brand, and Ultimately Your Competitive Advantage Image, and the first impressions it creates, is everything. Potential customers will form an opinion of your business within the first 30 seconds of visiting your website. Your website should be modern, easy to navigate and get the message about what makes you different than the competition across quickly. If you need reassurance that your website presents your brand properly, go to your website, set a timer for 30 seconds, and think about what you had the chance to view during that time. If the picture isn̢۪t clear, look for a solid web designer that can help you redevelop your design to catch and keep the attention of guests. Everything you do in the course of a business day will affect your brand. Nothing spreads faster than negative feedback. Always handle every customer with the utmost care, as everyone with Internet access has the potential to be a critic that can majorly impact your reputation. Likewise, customers that are treated well and have a pleasant experience with your business will spread the word as well. Despite all of the marketing tools available today, word of mouth is still the most profitable form of advertising. Look online for feedback about your business and your competitors. Make a list of what you can do better, and what your competition does best. Rank these in a top 10 format and work your way through the list. Make changes to your business model that will position you as the best in your industry in each category. Your brand, and your competitive advantage, will improve greatly as a result.

This is what Americans think the perfect day looks like

This is what Americans think the perfect day looks like This is what Americans think the perfect day looks like In a year full of blah, meh, and just okay days, how many of us have perfect days where nothing went wrong? Not very many of us, it turns out. In a U.S. Highbush Blueberry Council study conducted by One Poll, survey researchers found that the average American will only have 15 “perfect days” a year, days where participants cannot imagine it “going any better than they did.”What the perfect day looks likeIn the survey of 2,000 Americans, here is what the perfect day looked like to the majority of them: Waking up at 8:15 a.m. Clear skies with a temperature of 74 degrees 2 friends seen 3 hours spent socializing 2 hours spend eating 4 hours of relaxation 4 hours spent with family In bed at 10:50 p.m. Although we cannot expect to apply these formulaic answers to our own lives and expect a perfect day, these “perfect day” answers show that it does not take much for us to feel good. It does not need to involve expensive, fancy activities - just spending quality time with our loved ones and ourselves is enough for us to feel good about our day.Typically, a perfect day will not be found when we are office drones at work, but at home when we are relaxing and socializing with our friends and family, highlighting the need for us to create a work-family balance so that we can be put in the position to have a better than average day.Understandably, some days are outside of our control to make great. A gloomy morning is not likely to make us feel good. Forty-six percent of us said that a beautiful, sunny day was enough to make us feel happier and perk up our mood. And out of the 40 top mood-boosting options, the top answer for what would put participants in a better mood involved the lu ck of finding money in their pocket they didn’t know they had. But if you are not lucky enough to find random money, try just taking it easy. Being able to sleep in and lying in bed listening to rain fall outside were the other top two mood-boosting answers participants gave.
